Although some people say that this marine park is very similar to the Komodo Islands, one thing that will not be found in the Komodo Islands is the quiet and calm atmosphere that belongs to the Riung District.
This area is still rarely visited by tourists, this is influenced by access that is not as easy as the Komodo Islands. Located in Riung District, Ngada Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, this marine park is part of the conservation area of the Kupang Natural Resources Conservation Center. It is about 75 km from Bajawa City, the capital of Ngada Regency.
The trip to the Riung Island 17 Marine Park area can be reached in 2.5 hours by motorized vehicle. Along the way, you will pass a beautiful stretch of savanna and exotic hills typical of the island of Flores.
The naming of this marine park is inspired from August 17, which is the day of independence for the Republic of Indonesia, even though in fact the number of islands scattered in this marine park area is more than seventeen islands. Some of the islands frequently visited by visitors are Batang Kolong Island, Ontole Island, Puau Rutong, and Tiga Island. The islands in this area can be explored by boat that can be rented from local residents.
The Riung 17 Island Marine Park area presents underwater beauty that is very dear to miss when visiting Ngada Regency. Visitors can do snorkeling activities at several points such as around Pulau Tiga and Pulau Meja. The condition of the waters of this area can be said to be very clear and dominated by various kinds of coral reefs such as typessoft coral , table coral, and sea fan.
Ontole Island, which is part of a group of islands in the marine park, is also known as a habitat for several animal species, including bats, which number up to thousands of individuals, which usually perch on mangrove branches on the coast of the island.
